What is Qixi Festival?

The Qixi Festival, also known as the Qiqiao Festival, is a Chinese festival that celebrates the annual meeting of the Cowherd and Weaver Girl in Chinese mythology. It falls on the seventh day of the 7th month on the Chinese calendar. It has been celebrated in the Qixi Festival since the Han Dtnasty. The main custom is begging and praying.

On this day, it is said that when the Cowherd and the Weaver Girl meet on the Magpie Bridge, the girls will come and look up at the stars, looking for the Cowhed and the Vega on both sides of the Milky Way, hoping to see their annual meeting, begging God can make herself as ingenious as the Waever Girl, and pray that can have a happy marriage, thus forming the Qixi Festival.

Brief Introduction of Special AvatarⅡ

• Cowherd & Weaver Girl:

“The Cowherd and the Weaver Girl” is a romantic Chinese folk tale. The story tells of the romance between Zhinü （the weaver girl, symbolizing the star Vega) and Niulang (the cowherd, symbolizing the star Altair). Their love was not allowed, and thus they were banished to opposite sides of the heavenly river (symbolizing the Milky Way). Once a year, on the seventh day of the seventh lunar month, a flock of magpies would form a bridge to reunite the lovers for a single day. Though there are many variations of the story, the earliest-known reference to this famous myth dates back to a poem from the Classic of Poetry from over 2600 years ago.

• Liang Shanbo & Zhu Yingtai：

The Butterfly Lovers is a Chinese legend of a tragic love story of a pair of lovers, Liang Shanbo and Zhu Yingtai, whose names form the title of the story. As one of the four major folklore in China, it’s a legend passed down orally. It describes the love tragedy that Zhu Yingtai disguised herself as a man to study, got to know her classmate Liang Shanbo, but was unable to forge a marriage in the end.

• Xu Xian & Bai Suzhen:

Xu Xian and Bai Suzhen is an ancient Chinese love story about people and banshee. Also, it is one of the four major folk legends in China, telling the love tragedy of the snake banshee Bai Suzhen and the doctor Xu Xian, but was obstructed by the monk Fahai.

They fell in love deeply, but were separated by a monk named Fa Hai. Xu Xian was detained in Jinshan Temple by Fahai, and Bai Suzhen had no way but to used magic to flooded Jinshan Temple in order to rescue her husband.

• Prince & Snow White：

Snow White is a character in a fairy tale widely popular in Europe. It tells the story of Snow White being abused by her stepmother, the Queen, and fleeing into the forest to meet the Seven Dwarfs.
The queen who loves vanity and beauty always asks the mirror: “Mirror mirror, who is the most beautiful woman in this world?” When the mirror said it was Snow White, the queen disguised herself as a witch and tricked Snow White into eating a poisoned apple. Snow White, who ate the poisoned apple, was rescued by the prince who appeared later. In the end, the prince and princess lived happily together, and the queen got the punishment she deserved.

• Adam & Eve：

Adam is the name given in Genesis 1–5 to the first human. Beyond its use as the name of the first man, adam is also used in the Bible as a pronoun, individually as “a human” and in a collective sense as “mankind”. Genesis 1 tells of God’s creation of the world and its creatures, including adam, meaning humankind; in Genesis 2 God forms “Adam”, this time meaning a single male human, out of “the dust of the ground”, places him in the Garden of Eden, and forms a woman, Eve, as his helpmate; in Genesis 3 Adam and Eve eat the fruit of the tree of knowledge and God condemns Adam to labour on the earth for his food and to return to it on his death; Genesis 4 deals with the birth of Adam’s sons, and Genesis 5 lists his descendants from Seth to Noah.

The Genesis creation myth was adopted by both Christianity and Islam, and the name of Adam accordingly appears in the Christian scriptures and in the Quran. He also features in subsequent folkloric and mystical elaborations in later Judaism, Christianity, and gnosticism.

• Sun Wukong & Zixia Fairy：

Zixia Fairy and Sun Wukong are the characters in the movie “A Chinese Odyssey”.
In the movie, Zixia is pure and persistent, crazy for love, and comes to the world in order to find her own love. She finds that the ZhiZunBao is her wishful husband and pursues the SZhiZunBao. forced marriage. At the end of the film, Zixia and Qingxia reconciled. Later, Zixia was stabbed to death by in NiuMoWang (a bull monster) in order to protect ZhiZunBao who has already became Sun Wukong. Qingxia returned to the Tathagata Buddha as a wick.

• Romeo & Juliet：

Romeo and Juliet is a tragedy written by William Shakespeare early in his career about two young Italian star-crossed lovers whose deaths ultimately reconcile their feuding families. It was among Shakespeare’s most popular plays during his lifetime and, along with Hamlet, is one of his most frequently performed plays. Today, the title characters are regarded as archetypal young lovers.
