The Qixi Festival, also known as the Qiqiao Festival, is a Chinese festival that celebrates the annual meeting of the Cowherd and Weaver Girl in Chinese mythology. It falls on the seventh day of the 7th month on the Chinese calendar. It has been celebrated in the Qixi Festival since the Han Dtnasty. The main custom is begging and praying.
On this day, it is said that when the Cowherd and the Weaver Girl meet on the Magpie Bridge, the girls will come and look up at the stars, looking for the Cowhed and the Vega on both sides of the Milky Way, hoping to see their annual meeting, begging God can make herself as ingenious as the Waever Girl, and pray that can have a happy marriage, thus forming the Qixi Festival.
“The Cowherd and the Weaver Girl” is a romantic Chinese folk tale. The story tells of the romance between Zhinü (the weaver girl, symbolizing the star Vega) and Niulang (the cowherd, symbolizing the star Altair). Their love was not allowed, and thus they were banished to opposite sides of the heavenly river (symbolizing the Milky Way). Once a year, on the seventh day of the seventh lunar month, a flock of magpies would form a bridge to reunite the lovers for a single day. Though there are many variations of the story, the earliest-known reference to this famous myth dates back to a poem from the Classic of Poetry from over 2600 years ago.
The Butterfly Lovers is a Chinese legend of a tragic love story of a pair of lovers, Liang Shanbo and Zhu Yingtai, whose names form the title of the story. As one of the four major folklore in China, it’s a legend passed down orally. It describes the love tragedy that Zhu Yingtai disguised herself as a man to study, got to know her classmate Liang Shanbo, but was unable to forge a marriage in the end.
Xu Xian and Bai Suzhen is an ancient Chinese love story about people and banshee. Also, it is one of the four major folk legends in China, telling the love tragedy of the snake banshee Bai Suzhen and the doctor Xu Xian, but was obstructed by the monk Fahai.
They fell in love deeply, but were separated by a monk named Fa Hai. Xu Xian was detained in Jinshan Temple by Fahai, and Bai Suzhen had no way but to used magic to flooded Jinshan Temple in order to rescue her husband.
